“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.” (Ps 139:13-14)
Recently we have heard very disturbing reports of abortionists dismembering unborn and newly born infants and harvesting their parts for medical research. In the most horrific videos, doctors from Planned Parenthood admit to carefully dissecting the fetus in order to preserve the parts requested by their research clients. In one case a technician excitedly shows a trainee how the heart continues to beat even as the organs are removed one by one.
Watching these videos, I was reminded of the lyrics to the old Burger King commercial, “Special orders don’t upset us, all we ask is that you let us serve it your way.” Forty years of abortion on demand have reduced human life to a commodity that can be bought and sold according to the specifications of the parties to the transaction. Doctors have become so callous that they can discuss the most gruesome procedures over lunch at a pricey restaurant, laughing and winking at laws that prohibit the sale of human body parts for research purposes. It turns out that top management at Planned Parenthood earn hundreds of thousands of dollars in salary from abortions.
All this information was brought to light by a media research organization called the Center for Medical Progress. Self-styled medical reps from this company sought interviews with medical research firms in order to explore the nature and extent of their involvement with abortionists working with Planned Parenthood, an organization that receives billions of tax dollars to provide for women’s health care. There are numerous taped interviews over a period of many months on their website showing officials taking orders for 50 livers a week, haggling over price, and describing how intact fetuses just “fell out of the womb.”
Although Planned Parenthood executives claim the videos have been edited to create a false impression, they are reluctant to sue CMP because it would require disclosing procedures they do not want the public to know. The Center for Medical Progress claims they only removed material that was not germane to their investigation and a highly accredited forensic analysis and cyber security company confirmed that the videos “are authentic and show no evidence of manipulation…” In fact, the full, unedited version of the videos are readily available on the CMP website.
When asked repeatedly what standard was used to determine whether the fetal tissue could be harvested, one Planned Parenthood official said that parts could be removed even if the baby was born live provided it was not ‘viable‘. She would not define what ‘viable‘ meant. Potentially, it could exclude children born with any type of disability. But two young ladies who survived saline abortions vigorously defended their own right to life despite the fact that the procedure permanently disabled them.
How Did We Get Here?
So how did we get to the place where some can now justify taking innocent human life for medical research? This is a practice for which the Nazis were universally condemned only 70 years ago. It has now become commonplace in a land which once looked with horror upon such practices.
It all started with the argument that the life of an unborn fetus is not human and can be removed by a woman who does not want to give birth. Perhaps she is an unwed mother or she was a victim of rape or incest or the fetus is defective. However, as medical imaging has advanced and doctors have been able to perform life saving surgery at ever earlier stages of development, the point at which a fetus is deemed human has gradually moved closer and closer to the moment of conception. Bible believers have always maintained that life begins at the creation of the embryo.
But does it? Is it human life when it is conceived or when it becomes ‘viable‘?
According to Psalm 139, the answer is neither. Life begins even before conception and has nothing to do with viability. The Psalmist says, “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” The psalmist then goes on to say, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.”
All human life is created by God and was planned before even the mother and father were born. God had a plan for each and every human being even before creation took place. Every person ever conceived is a marvelous work of His hands. He knit them together in their mother’s womb. They are not commodities that can be bought and sold ala carte for a price set by those who had absolutely nothing to do with their creation. Their value is measured by the blood of the very Son of God which ransomed them from the righteous wrath of God the Father. They are of inestimable worth.
God abhors the destruction of sons and daughters by their parents. He says of the Israelites in Jeremiah 32:35, “They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to offer up their sons and daughters to Molech, though I did not command them, nor did it enter into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.” He says again in Leviticus 18:21, “You shall not give any of your children to offer them to Molech, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.”
Molech was a god worshiped by the Ammonites, one of the nations driven out of Canaan by the invading Israelite armies. They offered up their infant sons and daughters as burnt offerings to appease this god. In Leviticus 18:24-25 God says that he enabled the Israelites to drive these pagans out of their land for committing these very sins, “Do not make yourselves unclean by any of these things, for by all these the nations I am driving out before you have become unclean, and the land became unclean, so that I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.”
In Leviticus 20:5 God warned the Israelites not to repeat the sins of the Ammonites, “Any one of the people of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones.” He promised to wipe out the man and his entire extended family Himself if the people refused to execute judgment on His behalf, “And if the people of the land do at all close their eyes to that man when he gives one of his children to Molech, and do not put him to death, then I will set my face against that man and against his clan and will cut them off from among their people, him and all who follow him in whoring after Molech.” (Leviticus 20:4-5)
It is interesting to note that this same passage condemns a variety of sexual sins that God abhors including adultery, incest, bestiality and homosexuality. As with modern society, the problem of abortion had its roots in sexual license. Since the ancients didn’t have the benefit of modern contraceptives, the only one way they could dispose of unwanted babies was to kill them. Inventing a god that needed to be appeased by human sacrifice conveniently killed two birds with one stone. It got rid of the unwanted children and placated their gods at the same time.
However, the true God not only demanded that the guilty be punished, but He condemned those who turned a blind eye to the sins of their neighbors. He took judgment into His own hands by wiping out the entire extended family of the transgressors and ultimately driving the entire nation into exile.
Nowhere to Hide
Although Planned Parenthood has long been able to hide their gruesome activities from the public, they have not escaped God’s attention. No one can hide from God. As the Psalmist says, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night, even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you” (Ps 139:7-12). God used the Center for Medical Progress to expose the nefarious activities of these abortionists.
Because of the work of CMP there is a heightened level of outrage among a public that until now has been reluctant to seek answers to perplexing questions surrounding the abortion industry. Politicians are calling for Planned Parenthood to be de-funded. Pro-life advocates are gaining ground while pro-choice proponents are back-tracking. But will it be enough to spare us the judgment God has been storing up for those who have defiled His name or turned a blind eye to the atrocities they have committed? Judgment has not come in full yet. Perhaps if we turn from our wicked ways He may spare us. Only time will tell.
